Our Sustainable Future is Now
So let's start with a bit of recent history. In 2015 all United Nations Member States adopted the Sustainable Development Goals - SDG, a 15-year program to address challenges related to poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, and peace and justice globally.
More than a program, it is a call to action. And it has 17 goals, which are:
1 No poverty
2 Zero hunger
3 Good health and well-being
4 Quality education
5 Gender equality
6 Clean water and sanitation
7 Affordable and clean energy
8 Decent work and economic growth
9 Industry, innovation, and infrastructure
10 Reduced inequalities
11 Sustainable cities and communities
12 Responsible consumption and production
13 Climate action
14 Life below water
15 Life on land
16 Peace, Justice and strong institutions
Although a tiny grain of sand in the huge corporate sea, I decided that from the beginning, Kotae should be part of this program. So Kotae adopted two of these goals, SDG 12 and 15. They mean:
SDG 12 - Responsible consumption and production: "is about doing more and better with less. It is also about decoupling economic growth from environmental degradation, increasing resource efficiency and promoting sustainable lifestyles.” (a)
SDG 15 - Life on Land: "Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss." (b)
How do we reach them?
We print our greeting cards in forest-certified paper from forests managed responsibly, according to sustainable forestry practices that prevent forest and soil degradation, water pollution by hazardous chemicals, and workforce accidents. The forests provide clean air in a diverse environment of animals, trees, and other plants and create safe work opportunities for local communities.
The rigid mailers we use to ship our cards to you, and the white envelopes that accompany our greeting cards, are made of recycled paper. The transparent sleeve that protects our greeting cards is made of compostable materials.
And now you'll see the beauty of it!
When we deliver our cards to you, if you decide not to keep the rigid mailer used for it, and if you dispose it in the right garbage bin, the one exclusive for paper recycling, you will be helping complete the cycle that feeds SDG 12. The same goes for the transparent sleeves. You can throw them in composting bins, but if you don't have access to them, you can dispose them in the regular trash because they will decompose during the time.
The more you buy our cards, the more we print on forest-certified paper. The more demand exists for this kind of paper, the more paper suppliers will adopt this certification, increasing the number of forests protected and maintaining the sustainability cycle from SDG 15.
Maybe you didn't know that you are already part of the United Nations SDG. But you are! And then all you have to do is to choose from whom you buy paper products, giving preference to the ones who print in forest-certified paper and where you dispose your garbage, respecting and promoting the rules for recycling where you live.
I hope you're happy to know. So let's keep it up with conscious consumption and actions that improve sustainability.
